A Self-Managed Super Fund (SMSF) is a type of superannuation fund you manage yourself, giving you direct control over your retirement investment strategy. Coinbase supports SMSF accounts for eligible Australian trustees.
Eligibility
You must have an existing SMSF registered with the Australian Tax Office (ATO). If you don't have one yet, use ATO’s SMSF guide to understand if an SMSF is right for you.
Both individual and corporate trustee structures are supported, with up to 6 trustees and members.
Your SMSF account requires a dedicated email address. You cannot use the same email address as your personal Coinbase account.
A bank account held in the name of your SMSF is required to deposit funds.
There is no minimum balance to open an account.
How to sign up
The application is completed at https://www.coinbase.com/smsf. Mobile access is available on the Coinbase mobile app after your account is approved.
During the application, provide information across the following steps:
Your fund's full legal name as registered with the ATO, any other fund names, registered address, and ABN (Australian Business Number).
Details about the primary account holder.
Details of all trustees.
Your trust deed.
The nature and purpose of the business relationship, and expected deposit volume.
Your progress saves automatically, and you can return at any time to complete the application.
After you submit your application
After submitting, your application enters a review period. Verification typically takes 3-5 business days and an email will be sent as soon as a decision is made.
Account approved
When your application is approved, you'll see Account approved! on screen and receive a confirmation email.
Application still under review
If you see Verifying your info after signing in, your application is still being processed. No action is needed and an email will be sent with an update.
Application declined
If you see We couldn't approve your application, Coinbase is unable to provide specific details about the decision. If you have a different SMSF, you may reapply.
Email already in use
If you see Email already in use during sign up, the email address you entered is linked to an existing Coinbase account. Sign up with a different email address dedicated to your SMSF to continue.
Compliance and ATO requirements
Legal status of crypto in SMSFs
The ATO recognizes crypto as a valid SMSF investment. To comply, crypto holdings must be:
Permitted in your trust deed.
Included in your investment strategy.
Held in the fund's name, separate from personal holdings.
ATO record-keeping requirements
Your SMSF must:
Record all crypto holdings at market value
Maintain proper transaction records
Keep all assets separate from personal holdings
Borrowed funds
You cannot use Limited Recourse Borrowing Arrangements (LRBAs) to purchase crypto in your SMSF. All investments must come from existing fund cash.
ATO audits
You can export your full transaction history, holding snapshots, and valuations directly from the platform to share with your auditor.
Tax and reporting
How crypto is taxed in an SMSF
Crypto gains and income in an SMSF are taxed at the super rate of 15%. If you hold an asset for 12 or more months, a one-third capital gains tax (CGT) discount applies, reducing the effective rate to approximately 10%. In the pension phase, the rate may be 0%.
Reports and exports
Through Summ, your SMSF account provides access to:
Capital gains summaries
Full transaction history
Cost basis calculations
Holding valuations
Reports can be exported in PDF and CSV formats through Summ.
Capital gains calculations
Summ supports FIFO (first in, first out) and specific identification methods. It tracks purchase dates and costs and applies the CGT discount automatically.
Transferring existing crypto into your SMSF
Transferring personal crypto holdings into your SMSF is possible but complex. The ATO treats the transfer as the fund purchasing the asset at current market value, which may trigger a capital gains event. You may want to speak with a tax professional before transferring any assets.
Security
How your crypto is secured
SMSF assets are held in Coinbase Custody. Assets are stored offline and insured against theft and cyber attacks.
Asset protection
Your assets are legally separate from Coinbase's. They remain your property and can't be claimed by creditors. Coinbase is publicly traded and regularly audited.
Account security
Two-factor authentication (2FA) is required for all SMSF accounts. Supported methods include hardware security keys, authenticator apps, and biometrics.
