Update or troubleshoot your 2-step verification

2-step verification (also known as 2FA or two-factor authentication) is required to access your account. If you experience issues, you can update or troubleshoot your verification method.

Unlocking a compromised account differs from the 2-step verification recovery process.

Update your method without account access

  1. Update your device’s operating system (if needed) and ensure your internet connection is stable.

  2. Go to the Coinbase.com account recovery page.

    • You must know your password to start the recovery process.

    • Use the same device for the entire process.

  3. Enter your email address and password as usual.

  4. Select an available option (account dependent):

    • Upload your ID (takes up to 24 hours)

    • Answer security questions

    • Request trusted contacts approval

  5. Follow the remaining prompts.

  6. Once you’re verified and signed in, update your 2-step verification method immediately to maintain your access.

  7. You may be unable to transfer funds for 24 hours after verification.

Update your method while signed in

If you lose access to your 2-step verification method, but are still signed in to your account:

  1. Access your 2FA Settings.

  2. Select Get Started, within the Lost access to your 2FA? section.

  3. Enter your password.

  4. Select an option from the Recovery Options.

  5. Follow the remaining prompts.

  6. You may be unable to transfer funds for 24 hours after verification.

If you’re signed in to your account and have access to your 2-step verification method, use the following paths to update your method:

Troubleshoot

If you don't see recovery options:

  • Your account is likely locked because it was compromised.

  • Follow our unlock process to regain access to your account.

After each troubleshooting step, retry your security key. Continue to the next option until it works.

  1. Remove and reinsert the key into the port.

    • The key should light up

  2. For a Near Field Communication (NFC) security key:

    • Make sure your app is up to date

    • Remove your phone case

    • Uninstall and reinstall the app

  3. Close and reopen the app or browser.

  4. Clear your browser’s cache and cookies.

  5. Verify your key supports WebAuthN / Fido2 with the manufacturer.

If these steps are unsuccessful, follow the Can’t access steps above.

Troubleshoot your passkey access:

  • Your passkey may be tied to a single device. Check all of the devices you use.

    • Make sure you have a passkey set up on all devices that use different operating systems, such as Windows laptop, Mac, or Android phone.

  • If your passkey is stored on Chrome, Cloud (Microsoft/Google), or a password manager, access it from any device connected to the same storage method.

  • If you lose access to your passkey, you can still sign in to Coinbase with your email, password, and 2-step verification.

  • You can also update your passkey within your Apple, Google, or Microsoft account.

If these steps are unsuccessful, follow the Can’t access steps above.

Troubleshoot trusted contact issues:

  • If the invitation wasn't received, it may be in a spam/junk folder. If not, resend the invitation.

  • If a trusted contact's name isn’t on your approver list, they must complete the invitation process.

Security Prompt can only be turned on and off. It can't be deleted or updated.

To turn off your Security Prompt method:

  1. Sign in to your Coinbase.com account.

  2. Access your Security settings page.

  3. Select 2FA settings.

  4. Select the Security Prompt toggle to turn it off.
