Set up 2-step verification

If you're having an issue with 2-step verification, our 2-step verification troubleshooting article has some great tips.

Coinbase provides several options for generating 2-step verification codes (AKA 2-factor or multi-factor authentication) with various levels of setup.

What is 2-step verification?

Security key

Security keys are the most secure method for 2-step verification. For more information:

TOTP

Duo and Google Authenticator provide a very secure configuration for 2-step verification. These do not require phone reception or internet access once they're set up. Learn how to set up a TOTP authenticator.

Coinbase Security Prompt

Coinbase Security Prompt delivers push notifications from your active mobile app session to either approve or deny a login attempt that’s made from a different device (such as web, mobile web, or the mobile app on a different device). This supplementary feature is enabled by default if you’ve chosen text messages (SMS) as your 2-step verification method, but you can manage the setting yourself.

SMS text

If you verify a phone number via text message without installing any TOTP authentication apps, you will automatically receive 2-step codes via SMS text message.

Landlines/Voice Call

It is not possible to receive 2-step codes delivered to a landline phone number by voice call. For security purposes, Coinbase does not support the delivery of 2-step codes via voice call. If you have a landline registered with your Coinbase account, follow these steps to upgrade your security:

1. Sign in to the Coinbase website with your username and password.

2. Click I need help > I need to update my phone number.

3. Complete the Account Recovery process by following the steps listed.

To increase your security, enable an authenticator.
