Altcoins and ICOs

DO NOT send any unsupported cryptocurrencies to your Coinbase account or participate in an ICO using your Coinbase account. Doing so will result in a loss of the cryptocurrency in question.

Unsupported Cryptocurrencies

Because of the irreversible nature of cryptocurrencies, the security and integrity of our private keys is of the utmost importance to us. Consequently, private keys associated with a specific address are virtually inaccessible outside of extremely limited circumstances.

As a result, Coinbase is incompatible with any cryptocurrencies or tokens other than those found here.

Any unsupported cryptocurrencies or tokens sent to a Coinbase address will effectively be lost.

Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs)

Additionally, you should not send any cryptocurrency to an ICO address from your Coinbase account. Most ICOs issue their tokens to the same address that funds were sent from. Since Coinbase does not support those tokens, we are not able to credit an account with or return tokens sent to a Coinbase address, for the same reasons as outlined above.

If you would like to participate in an ICO, you will first need to send your cryptocurrency to an external address which you control the private keys to, in order to avoid loss of the cryptocurrency.
