IRS Form 1099-MISC

Note

The Coinbase tax center is only available to retail trading customers. If you use multiple wallets or exchanges (or previously used Coinbase Pro), we suggest using alternative tools for tax reporting such as Crypto Tax Calculator, CoinTracker or TurboTax. For more info, visit our help article: Use TurboTax, Crypto Tax Calculator, or CoinTracker to report on cryptocurrency.

Coinbase issues an IRS form called 1099-MISC to report miscellaneous income rewards to US customers that meet certain criteria. You can find all of your IRS forms in the Documents section of your Coinbase Tax Center.

Coinbase no longer issues an IRS Form 1099-K.

Who receives an IRS Form 1099-MISC from Coinbase?

You'll receive IRS Form 1099-MISC from Coinbase if:

  • You're a Coinbase customer AND

  • You're a US person for tax purposes AND

  • You've earned $600 or more in miscellaneous income such as rewards or fees from Learning rewards, USDC Rewards, and/or staking

This is income paid to you by Coinbase, so you may need Coinbase’s tax identification number (TIN) when you file your taxes: 45-5293997.

Why doesn’t the number on my IRS Form 1099-MISC match the “Estimated income” number in the Tax Center?

The number on your Form 1099-MISC might not match the “Estimated income” number in the Tax Center. You should use the number on your Form 1099-MISC to file your taxes. The most common reasons these numbers might differ are:

  • Coinbase needed to recognize ETH staking income from before 2023 on the Form 1099-MISC for 2023. See Tax impact of ETH and cbETH (After the Shanghai and Capella Upgrades) to learn more.

  • Coinbase reports some Coinbase Wallet income, such as Wallet Quest rewards, on Form 1099-MISC for customers receiving Form 1099-MISC. This number is not shown in “Estimated income” in the Tax Center.
