Polygon (MATIC) announced a migration to a new token (POL). On September 4, 2024, Coinbase will add support for POL on the Ethereum network. Here's what to expect.
Polygon network support
Between August 28 and September 10, 2024, Coinbase will disable send and receive functionality for MATIC on the Polygon network. Please avoid depositing MATIC on Polygon. Send and receive functionality will also be disabled for VOXEL, USDC, CBETH, and WETH on the Polygon network.
Starting September 10, 2024, Coinbase will replace the MATIC asset ticker for the Polygon network with POL.
Ethereum network support
Starting September 4, 2024, Coinbase will add support for POL on the Ethereum network. After this, trading for both MATIC and POL on Ethereum will be supported until further notice.
In the coming months, Coinbase will migrate customer MATIC balances to POL at a conversion rate of 1:1. We’ll provide more details and a timeline once available.
Staking information
Customers who currently have MATIC staked through Coinbase can continue staking and receiving rewards.
Customers who want to start staking MATIC or stake additional MATIC can do so after September 4th, 2024 and until further notice.
Polygon receive addresses
On August 28, 2024, QR codes and receive addresses for MATIC will be unavailable to help prevent sends to your account during the migration. Please avoid attempting to deposit MATIC (for example, using an old address).
On September 10, 2024, after the migration is completed, we’ll enable receive functionality for POL.
During the migration
Avoid sending assets on the Polygon network to prevent delays in assets being credited to your account.
Deposits of MATIC on Polygon will be credited as POL once the migration is complete.
Deposits of supported assets like VOXEL, USDC, CBETH, and WETH on Polygon will be credited once the migration is complete.
The feature to recover unsupported assets on the Polygon network will not be available.
Existing MATIC in your account
If you currently have MATIC in your account, you can:
Send it on the Ethereum network (during and after the migration).
Sell it for USDC to purchase POL.
Convert it to POL (subject to slippage and fees).
Send it to a self-custody wallet.
