2-Step Verification Setup

2-Step Verification Methods

2-Step Verification is required to access and perform certain activities on all Coinbase Accounts. Three forms of authentication are offered:

  • SMS (Text Message)

  • Authenticator Application

  • Security Key (Yubikey)

We recommend an authenticator app especially if you plan to have multiple users share access to the account. The majority of Coinbase clients use one of the below authenticator apps, but any app that supports the Time-based One-Time Password (TOTP) protocol should work.

You will need to download an Authenticator application in advance of modifying your 2-Step Verification

Setting Up 2-Step Verification

  • Navigate to https://www.coinbase.com/settings/security_settings

  • Scroll down to the 2-Step Verification section

  • Select Authenticator - You will need to verify your existing 2-Step Verification to proceed. If you are a new user, you will have to approve via sms. If you are an existing Coinbase client and need to update your 2-Step Verification, you will have to approve the change with your current 2-Step Verification.

    • If your team has multiple users, please see Multi-User Setup before proceeding

  • Enable Authenticator Support - After approving the update via sms or your current setup, a popup window will appear with a QR Code

  • Scan the QR Code with the Authenticator app

  • Enter the six-digit code and select 'Enable'

Multi-User Setup

For accounts where multiple users will be utilizing the login credentials, all account users must be available to scan the QR code displayed in order to enroll their authenticator app. To ensure that everyone who needs access to the account can successfully log in we recommend doing one of two things:

  • All users will need to be in the same location. All users will need to scan the QR code to set up the 2-Step Verification access on each individual’s phone.

    • If all users cannot be in the same place at once, then have everyone get on video call with one person sharing their screen. This will allow everyone to scan the QR code and enable the 2-Step Verification individually.
