Coinbase Prime FAQs

I thought Coinbase Prime was already a product?

Recently, we rebranded our direct-market-access product from Coinbase Prime to Coinbase Exchange to better align our services and product functionality. Coinbase Exchange provides high performance APIs and an expert trading platform for market makers and high-frequency traders. Coinbase Prime is an integrated prime brokerage platform.

How is Prime different from Exchange, Custody, or OTC?

Coinbase Prime is an integrated platform that provides clients with trading, custody, and prime services. With Prime, we bring all the tools and services you need together, providing clients with a unified product experience.

When can I upgrade to Prime?

We are currently running a limited beta program with full availability expected later this year.

How do I upgrade?

There’s nothing you need to do now. We'll share more information on Coinbase Prime over the next few months as we make the product available to all clients. In the meantime, if you’d like to learn more about the product, visit our new website: www.coinbase.com/prime

Will my pricing change?

Coinbase Prime will have it’s own pricing schedule, but we will communicate the new price schedule to you before you transition to using Prime.

I am currently a Custody client, what does this product announcement mean for me?

There is no action required on your end. Your product experience will remain the same until you convert to Coinbase Prime. Once Coinbase Prime launches for full availability, we will reach out to you with instructions on how to upgrade to Coinbase Prime if you would like to do so.

Can I apply for Coinbase Prime and still keep my existing Coinbase Custody account for my other investment vehicles?

Yes, you can apply for Coinbase Prime and keep your existing Coinbase Custody account. When Coinbase Prime launches, you will be able to transfer assets between these accounts.

I am currently an Exchange client, what does this product announcement mean for me?

You may continue to use Coinbase Exchange (previously branded as Coinbase Prime), but you’ll need to access exchange.coinbase.com to sign in to Coinbase Exchange. Once signed in, your product experience will remain entirely the same as before the rebrand.

Once Coinbase Prime becomes available, you can upgrade. Alternatively, you may choose to maintain both a Coinbase Exchange and Coinbase Prime account in parallel.

Can I apply for Coinbase Prime and still keep my existing Coinbase Exchange or Custody accounts?

Yes, you can apply for Coinbase Prime and keep your existing Coinbase Exchange or Custody accounts. When Coinbase Prime launches, you'll be able to transfer assets between these accounts.

Do I have to convert to Coinbase Prime?

No, you do not need to use Coinbase Prime. However, we have designed this unified investing experience and think that most clients will benefit from the integrated nature of this platform. We recommend reading more about the features and services offered by Prime at www.coinbase.com/prime.

If I already have an account, do I have to resubmit my account information to get started with Coinbase Prime?

We will use the information we have on file about your entity, but you may need to submit additional information (such as an authorized user list) depending on what product you were using. If you are not in the United States, please contact your account manager to get more information on how to upgrade to Coinbase Prime.

Are there API’s available with Prime? How does this impact my existing API’s?

Coinbase Prime APIs will not be ready for beta launch. If you would like early access to the Prime APIs, please fill out info here or contact your account manager.

For clients currently using Coinbase Exchange, starting on June 3rd, existing api.prime.coinbase.com endpoints will be deprecated and will no longer be functional. If you use our Prime API endpoints, you have until June 3 to make the switch to our Exchange API endpoints at api.exchange.coinbase.com. All Exchange API endpoints can be found in our documentation here. The current endpoints at prime.coinbase.com will continue to work over this transition period, but we recommend making this change as soon as possible.

Your current API keys will continue to work and there is no need to recreate them. We are only changing the endpoint target—no other aspect of the functionality will change.

Is Prime available outside of the US?

Coinbase Prime will be available to most international Coinbase Exchange and Custody clients, although initially, trade execution services will be provided via the US entity (Coinbase Inc.) with associated custody provided via our Irish custodial entity, Coinbase Custody International Limited for non-U.S.-based customers. Coinbase Prime will not be available to clients in a small number of international jurisdictions under this model. As additional services are offered to Coinbase Prime, we will assess feasibility across any relevant international markets.

If certain jurisdictions are not allowed on Coinbase Prime, will we have to repaper?

As an existing Exchange and/or Custody customer, you may retain those services/contractual arrangements in the event that you cannot access Coinbase Prime at this time.
