Address formats on Coinbase Prime

The Bitcoin and Ethereum networks each have different address formats to reduce the risk of sending funds to the incorrect address.  Expand each section below to learn about the address formats for each network.

There are two address formats that create a distinction between Bitcoin Cash (BCH) and bitcoin (BTC) addresses. This reduces errors when sending and receiving Bitcoin Cash.

  • Bitcoin Cash (BCH) addresses use the Cash Address (CashAddr) format. It begins with bitcoincash, followed by the address.

    • Example: bitcoincash:qpplh0vyfn67cupcmhq4g2dt3s50rlarmclu9vnndt

  • Bitcoin (BTC) addresses use the legacy address format.

    • Example: qpplh0vyfn67cupcmhq4g2dt3s50rlarmclu9vnndt

You’ll see an error message if you try to withdraw funds to a Bitcoin Cash (BCH) address using a legacy address. Select Update address to correct the address.

Note
: There are no changes to the private and public keys.

There are two address formats that help reduce errors when sending and receiving Ethereum.

  • The EIP-55 format contains a combination of numbers plus capitalized and lowercase letters.

    • Example: 0x507877C2E26f1387432D067D2DaAfa7d0420d90a.

  • The legacy address format contains numbers plus all lowercase characters.

    • Example: 0x507877c2e26f1387432d067d2daafa7d0420d90a

You’ll see an error message if you try to withdraw to an Ethereum (ETH) address using a legacy address format. You’ll need to ensure that your address in the legacy format is converted in Prime by selecting Correct ETH address. If you’ve previously converted the legacy address to EIP-55, select Update address to correct the address.

Note: There are no changes to the private and public keys.
