Client Categorisation

Customers must self-select into one of two FCA-defined categories: Restricted Investor or High Net Worth Investor, or certify that neither applies. Only those who self-certify as either a Restricted or High Net Worth Investor can buy or trade cryptocurrencies, as per the FCA’s Financial Promotions regime.

Verify your identity

  1. Sign in to your Coinbase account.

  2. Complete ID verification.

Recommended: Set up a 2-step verification app (TOTP) to help protect against unauthorised account access.

Validate tax residency and TIN

This requirement begins on 1 January 2026.

  1. Enter the countries where you pay taxes and your Tax Identification Number (TIN) or regional equivalent (if applicable).

    • You must obtain one from your government and provide it to Coinbase to start trading and transacting. Learn more.

  2. Before submitting your information, review the accuracy of your TIN or regional equivalent.

    • Select an entry line item to edit or delete it.

  3. Select Confirm to submit your information.

  4. If your address, the country linked to your phone number or your place of birth doesn’t match your tax residency, you must select an explanation.

    • If none of the options apply, enter a brief written explanation so we can validate your tax residency. We’ll review it and email you when it’s complete.

Appropriateness Assessment

The Appropriateness Assessment is a short multiple-choice test about Coinbase’s cryptoasset trading products. It helps ensure these products are suitable for customers. As per the FCA’s Financial Promotions regime, only customers who pass this test can buy or trade cryptoassets.
