Troubleshooting

Overview

If you are having trouble logging in to Coinbase Token Manager, use the troubleshooting steps below to rule out common issues with your wallet, browser, and network. If the problem persists, you can contact support with specific details so the team can investigate.

Overview

In Coinbase Token Manager, access to administrative and on‑chain actions for a smart contract account is controlled by the owner/admin wallet. This wallet (or multisig) is the only entity that can:

  • Sign transactions that change account‑level configuration

  • Withdraw tokens from escrow back to the treasury wallet (for smart contract accounts)

  • Transfer account ownership to a different admin wallet

For security reasons, Coinbase and third parties cannot unilaterally take control of your tokens or replace the owner wallet without a valid on‑chain signature from the current owner.

If you lose access to the admin wallet for a self‑custodied smart contract account and cannot recover it, your options are very limited. This article explains what that means and what you can still do.

How admin access works

For self‑custodied smart contract accounts:

  • The admin wallet is the on‑chain owner or controller of the account

  • Only that wallet (or its multisig) can:

    • Log in with owner‑level permissions

    • Approve on‑chain actions like escrow withdrawals and ownership transfers

Because of this design:

  • Neither Coinbase Token Manager nor Coinbase staff can:

    • Recover the private key or seed phrase for your admin wallet

    • Bypass the wallet and sign transactions on your behalf

    • Change the on‑chain owner without a valid owner‑signed transaction

This is intentional and protects your organization from unauthorized access by any third party, including service providers.

What happens if you lose access to the admin wallet

If you permanently lose access to the private key, seed phrase, or signing mechanism for your admin wallet and have no way to recover it:

  • You will not be able to:

    • Log in to Coinbase Token Manager as the admin using that wallet

    • Withdraw tokens from escrow back into the admin wallet

    • Transfer account ownership to a new admin wallet

  • However, in most smart contract account designs:

    • Stakeholder claims of vested and unlocked tokens may still be possible, because:

      • Claims are executed by stakeholders’ own wallets interacting with the escrow contract

      • They do not require the admin wallet to co‑sign each claim

The exact behavior depends on how your account and contracts are configured, but in general:

  • Admin‑initiated actions that require the owner wallet will be blocked

  • Stakeholder‑initiated claim flows may continue to work for vested and unlocked amounts

What you can still do for stakeholders

Even if you cannot access the admin wallet:

  • Any tokens that are already vested and unlocked for stakeholders may still be claimable by them if:

    • Your account type and network support self‑service claims, and

    • Escrow or custody funds remain in place to cover those claims

In this situation, you should:

  • Communicate clearly to stakeholders about:

    • How to log in and view their grants

    • How to claim vested and unlocked tokens, if the claim feature is enabled

  • Coordinate with your internal legal and finance teams on:

    • How to handle any unvested or future vesting that may no longer be administratively adjustable

If you are using a custody integration (for example, Coinbase Prime, Anchorage Digital) rather than a pure smart contract escrow:

  • Recovery options may depend on the custodian’s processes

  • You should contact your custodian and Coinbase Token Manager support for specific guidance

When to contact Coinbase Token Manager support

If you have lost access to your admin wallet:

  1. Confirm that all recovery options for the wallet itself have been exhausted (for example, backup seed, hardware recovery, multisig signer access).

  2. Contact the Coinbase Token Manager support team at tm-support@coinbase.com with:

    • Your organization name

    • The admin wallet address you have lost access to

    • Your account type (for example, smart contract escrow, custody integration, or tracking‑only)

    • A description of the issue and any steps you’ve already tried

What support can and cannot do:

  • Support can:

    • Help you understand what remains possible with your current configuration

    • Clarify whether stakeholders can still claim tokens

    • Provide guidance on next steps and any risk‑mitigation options

  • Support cannot:

    • Recover your private key or seed phrase

    • Override on‑chain ownership without a valid wallet signature

    • Move tokens out of wallets or contracts your organization controls

Preventing admin wallet access loss

To reduce the risk of losing access in the future:

  • Use a multisig wallet (for example, a Safe) or an institutional custody solution instead of a single‑person wallet for admin access

  • Establish internal policies for:

    • Key backup and recovery

    • Role changes and offboarding of employees who control admin or signer wallets

    • Periodic checks that multiple authorized people can access the admin or multisig wallet

  • Document clear procedures for:

    • Transferring account ownership when roles change

    • Rotating admin keys or signers securely

Building resilience at the wallet and governance level is the best protection against this type of issue.
