Staking eligibility

Please review the United States section below for eligibility in your state.

On June 6, 2023, state securities agencies in Alabama, California, Illinois, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, South Carolina, Vermont, Washington, and Wisconsin issued notices and orders related to Coinbase’s retail staking services in those states. Some of those state orders impose restrictions on Coinbase’s ability to offer staking services in those states, and we encourage customers of these states to click the links above to read and understand their state’s current notice or order. We are engaging with each of the states directly.

Staking of supported assets is available to Coinbase customers who have an account in good standing and who live in a jurisdiction where we offer staking for that asset. Some jurisdictions require tax identification information for compliance. Coinbase can change eligibility requirements anytime, even after assets have been staked. We don’t guarantee that customers will receive staking rewards.

We verify eligibility daily. If a customer becomes ineligible, we’ll let them know that we’ll unstake their assets after a 14-day grace period or that we may be unable to pay out staking rewards until they restore their eligibility. Some customers may be able to remediate and restore eligibility by updating or verifying certain information. Customers will continue to earn rewards on staked balances while reward payouts are being withheld or during the 14-day grace period until their assets are unstaked, as applicable (but rewards won’t be restaked).

If you have reviewed the eligibility requirements for staking and believe your account was incorrectly marked as ineligible, contact our support team.

Eligible tokens

Depending on the token you stake, the reward value will differ. You can view these values by going to the Earn tab on Coinbase.com or the Coinbase mobile app.

Any assets that are eligible to earn staking rewards will have both a primary and an earning balance.

  • Primary balance: the amount that isn’t staked and isn’t currently earning rewards

  • Earning balance: the amount that you have staked, including any automatically restaked rewards

United States Eligibility

The table below reflects eligibility of staking in different states, and will be updated as appropriate. Preliminary orders issued by securities regulators in five states (CA, MD, NJ, SC, WI) currently impose restrictions on Coinbase's ability to offer staking to residents of those states, although proceedings are ongoing in those states.

While we are fully complying with all applicable orders, we continue to vigorously defend our customers' right to stake. For more, please see our blog post on Why We Stand by Staking.

Staking eligibility address is based on your most recent document verification.
