Claim a decedent’s Coinbase account

If you’ve been named to claim a loved one’s Coinbase account after they’ve passed away, we're here to guide you through the process during this difficult time.

Requested documents

  • Death certificate: The official death certificate.

  • Probate documents for the deceased’s estate: Probate, Letters Testamentary, Letters of Administration, Affidavit for Collection, or Small Estate Affidavit.

  • Photo identification (ID): A current, valid government-issued photo ID of the person(s) named in the probate documents.

  • Instructions: A letter signed by the person(s) named in the probate documents directing Coinbase to transfer the assets to the specified account, including its associated email address.

To claim the account:

  1. Sign in to your Coinbase.com account.

  2. Select Contact us below.

  3. Select Accessing my account and choose Claim account of a deceased family member.

  4. Select Need more help? and choose your preferred contact method.

If you don’t currently have a Coinbase.com account or can’t sign in to your account:

  1. Access our contact form (the necessary options are auto-selected).

  2. Upload the requested documents.

  3. Enter all required information.

    • List any missing documents, if applicable.

  4. Generate a verification code to safely submit your form and documents.

Note:

Coinbase doesn’t currently support naming a beneficiary for individual accounts. Estate planning documents or state intestate laws dictate the ownership transfer of a Coinbase account.
