Introduction to Prime Custody on Coinbase Prime

What Is Prime Custody?

Prime Custody is Coinbase's institutional-grade prime brokerage solution, built for clients who prefer their assets to remain within a qualified custodian at all times. Offered through Coinbase Custody Trust Company (CCTC) — a New York-chartered trust company regulated by the New York Department of Financial Services (NYDFS) — Prime Custody consolidates trading, financing, settlement, and storage into a single, fully custodied portfolio.

Within a Prime Custody portfolio, clients can conduct all activities through a regulated, qualified custodian:

  • Trade digital assets via Coinbase's multi-venue Smart Order Router

  • Finance positions through Trade Finance, Portfolio Margin and Cross Margin

  • Custody both crypto and cash assets

Prime Custody is not a standalone storage product, but a full prime brokerage portfolio type. Unlike a traditional Prime Trading portfolio, Prime Custody enables clients to trade and finance without ever moving assets outside of the qualified custodian.

Who Is Prime Custody For?

Registered Investment Advisors (RIAs)

For advisors seeking to comply with the SEC's Custody Rule (and the proposed Safeguarding Rule), Prime Custody provides an end-to-end qualified custody solution where all assets, including USD and USDC, are held in a single regulated location. A third-party legal opinion is available (under NDA) confirming that Prime Custody meets the requirements of the SEC's Custody Rule.

Active Traders

For traders who prefer to keep assets in a qualified custodian but have avoided doing so due to Vault withdrawal windows, Prime Custody offers comparable withdrawal speeds to Prime Trading with full access to trading and financing products, all within a qualified custodian.

High-Net-Worth Individuals & Family Offices

For large holders and their advisors, Prime Custody creates a regulated perimeter with a consistent policy engine with no onchain visibility into holdings or transaction history, ensuring discretion around the size and movement of assets.

QC-Sensitive Clients

For clients who prefer a qualified custodian due to enhanced regulatory oversight but struggle with the operational burden of asset sweeping, Prime Custody delivers trading, financing, and custody in an efficient off-chain solution.

Key Features & Benefits

Compliant End-to-End Custody

Built to meet SEC qualified custody requirements for regulated advisors. With Prime Custody, clients can trade, finance, and hold assets entirely within Coinbase Custody Trust Company (CCTC) — our NYDFS-regulated qualified custodian. Assets are never titled to clients outside of CCTC, meaning the complete lifecycle of an asset, from trading to settlement to storage, stays within the qualified custodian at all times.

Prime Trading Connectivity

Trade directly from custody through Coinbase Prime's multi-venue Smart Order Router, accessing deep liquidity 24/7/365 without moving assets out of the qualified custodian. Built on the same proven infrastructure as Prime Trading, Prime Custody delivers the same depth of liquidity and execution quality, eliminating the operational friction of pre-funding a trading wallet or sweeping assets from Vault before executing.

Capital-Efficient Execution

Support for Portfolio Margin, Cross Margin and Trade Finance enables more efficient use of capital while assets remain in custody. Clients no longer need to choose between operating within a qualified custodian and accessing Coinbase's full financing toolkit.

No Onchain Address Visibility

Prime Custody uses an omnibus wallet structure (Legally Segregated, Operationally Commingled — LSOC), meaning client assets are held in shared operational wallets. Client addresses cannot be identified or tracked — there is no per-client onchain segregation.

This prevents blockchain analytics tools, whale-watching services, and social media trackers from linking specific transactions or balances to your organization. This is especially valuable for:

  • Corporates & public companies executing treasury strategies who want to avoid blockchain tracking

  • DAOs & token projects distributing tokens without signaling activity ahead of planned distributions

  • VCs & funds rebalancing or exiting positions without broadcasting intent onchain

  • HNWIs & family offices requiring discretion around the size and movement of holdings

USD Custody from a Qualified Custodian

Prime Custody allows clients to deposit and withdraw USD directly from a qualified custodian — a first for Coinbase Prime. Fiat rails are supported through JPMorgan Chase (JPM), a Global Systemically Important Bank (GSIB), minimizing counterparty risk.

How It Works

Prime Custody uses the proven infrastructure of Coinbase's existing Prime Trading solution — an omnibus model with a small online component — now operating entirely within CCTC.

Key structural details:

  • Assets are held predominantly in offline wallets, with a small fraction in a diversified network of online wallets to facilitate expected withdrawal demand

  • Both online and offline storage are covered by Coinbase's industry-leading insurance policy

  • Client assets are legally segregated from Coinbase assets and from each other, even though they are operationally commingled

Is Prime Custody the same as Prime Vault?

No. Prime Custody is a full prime brokerage portfolio type encompassing trading, financing, and custody in a single qualified custodian. Prime Vault is a standalone custody-only solution. Clients with a Prime Custody also have access to Prime Vault within the same portfolio. While both are housed in CCTC, Prime Custody allows clients to trade and finance directly from the account, whereas Vault requires asset sweeps before trading.

Why is an omnibus structure safe?

Outside of crypto, omnibus structures (Legally Segregated, Operationally Commingled — LSOC) are standard practice in traditional finance. The Depository Trust Company and major derivatives clearinghouses use omnibus models. The SEC recognizes this as a permissible, traditional practice under the Custody Rule.

Within crypto, Coinbase has operated this model securely for over 14 years with zero loss of client assets. The structure provides immediate liquidity, onchain privacy, and asset protection while client assets remain legally segregated from Coinbase's assets.

Can I earn USDC Rewards on my Prime Custody wallet?

Yes. If already enrolled in USDC Rewards, your rewards will automatically extend to USDC balances in Prime Custody wallets. If not yet enrolled, self-enroll via the Earn Center or the USDC asset details page in Coinbase Prime (Portfolio > USDC > Asset Balances). You must be logged in as an Administrator or Authorized Signatory to enroll.

Does Prime Custody support staking?

Prime Custody's omnibus wallet does not support staking. However, clients can stake assets through a segregated Prime Vault wallet within the same Prime Custody portfolio.

How does Prime Custody appear in the API?

When enumerating wallets via REST API in a Prime Custody portfolio, hot wallets will be listed as type QC (Qualified Custodian). All other trading, transfer, and financing API behavior — via both REST and FIX APIs — is consistent with Trading wallets, with the exceptions noted above.
