A B-Notice is a notice sent by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to notify payers (such as Coinbase) of a discrepancy between the Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) and the name reported on Form 1099.
If you’re notified that we have received a B-Notice regarding the 1099 filed by Coinbase, you’ll be required to provide us with an updated W-9 form.
If we’ve received notice from the IRS twice within three years stating that the combination of the name and TIN on your 1099 is incorrect, Coinbase may request a photocopy of your Social Security card or Letter 147C.
If you’ve been asked to submit your Social Security card, ensure it shows your correct name/SSN combination that differs from the name and SSN combination appearing on the notice.
Alternatively, it must show a date of issuance that is no earlier than six months prior to the date on the notice.
If you’ve been asked to submit IRS Letter 147C, ensure it shows your correct entity legal name/EIN combination that differs from the entity legal name and EIN combination appearing on the notice.
Write the Internal Revenue Service Center where you file your income tax return, and ask the IRS to send you a Letter 147C.
If we do not receive an updated and accurate digital Form W-9 from you by the indicated date (and if applicable your SSN card or Letter 147C), your account will be subject to restrictions and/or subject to backup withholding on eligible payments.
