Monitor margin health
The Derivatives and Options trading pages on Coinbase.com have (by default, and as an option with our modular UI) a Margin details widget which describes the important metrics related to your Global Derivatives margin health. This widget is also available on the Portfolio pages on Coinbase.com and our mobile application.
The Margin details widget includes the following information. The fields shown depend on your account and margin mode.
Initial margin / Initial margin (IM) | The collateral required to open your current positions, shown as an amount and a % share of your margin balance. Reaching 100% will prevent you from opening new positions. |
Maintenance margin / Maintenance margin (MM) | The minimum collateral required to keep positions open, shown as an amount and a % share of your margin balance. Reaching 100% will result in liquidation. |
Margin health | Healthy: 0-79.99% Warning: 80.00-89.99% Danger: 90.00-99.99% Liquidated: 100.00% |
Equity | Your total account value. All balances plus unrealized P&L minus any borrows. |
Session P&L | Your realized and unrealized profit or loss during the current trading session. Trading sessions restart daily at 08:00 UTC. |
Available margin | Funds available for trading. This balance does not include funds already held for initial margin. |
Available to transfer | The amount available to transfer out after margin requirements, unsettled session profits, and other applicable holds are accounted for. This may be less than your total balance. |
Account margin mode | Standard margin or Portfolio margin determines how margin requirements are calculated. This is separate from whether a position uses cross or segregated margin. |
Margin types
Cross margin
Transfer accepted collateral from your Primary portfolio to your Global Derivatives portfolio. This adds collateral to the shared cross-margin account. See Fund your Global Derivatives portfolio for instructions.
Segregated margin
Open the segregated position’s details and use the add-margin flow to allocate additional USDC to that position. Follow the prompts to review and confirm.
Transferring funds into your Global Derivatives portfolio alone does not add them to an existing segregated position.
