Payment methods for US customers

Note: Coinbase doesn't accept physical checks for payment methods. Any checks we receive will be voided and destroyed.

Link a payment method

  1. Go to Payment Methods on web or select Profile & Settings from the main menu on mobile.

  2. Select Add a payment method.

  3. Select the type of account you want to link.

  4. Follow the instructions to complete verification depending on the type of account being linked.

Bank account

You can link your personal bank account instantly and securely using Instant verification by providing your online banking credentials via Plaid, or manually by using the Deposit verification process. The name on your bank account must match the verified name on your Coinbase account.

Link your bank account using Instant verification

  1. Go to Payment Methods on web or select Profile & Settings from the main menu on mobile.

  2. Select Add a payment method, then Bank account.

  3. From the Plaid notification window, select Continue.

  4. From the screen with bank logos, select or search for the name of the bank for the account you'd like to link and select Continue.

    • If your bank isn't listed, you'll need to link your account using the Deposit verification method.

  5. Enter your bank's login credentials.

    • Additional security questions and a PIN may be required depending on your bank's security procedures.

Link your bank account manually using Deposit verification

  1. Go to Payment Methods on web or select Profile & Settings from the main menu. on mobile.

  2. Select Add a payment method, then Bank account.

  3. When the Plaid notification window opens, select X to close the window.

  4. From the subsequent "unsuccessful" window, select Manually link bank account.

  5. Follow the prompts to enter the account details, including the account and routing numbers, then select the option to verify the account.

    • Two small test deposits will be made to your bank account, which usually reach your account in 2-3 business days.

  6. Select verify for your bank account on the Payments Method page and enter the "cent" portion of the deposit amounts.

    • For example, if the amounts on your bank statement are $1.10 and $1.20, enter "10" and "20".

Debit card

Visa and MasterCard debit cards can be used to buy on Coinbase. We're unable to support prepaid cards or other cards without an associated billing address. In most cases, photo ID verification is required before adding a card.

Link a debit card

  1. Go to Payment Methods on web or select Profile & Settings from the main menu.on mobile.

  2. Select Add a payment method, then Debit card.

  3. Provide your debit card information.

    • Two small, temporary debits will be applied to your card.

  4. Go to your card's online banking activity to find the two amounts.

  5. Enter the amounts on Coinbase to complete adding and verifying your card.

  • All debit card payments are processed through Coinbase, Inc.

  • For information on cashing out funds using your debit card, see Instant Card Cashouts.

  • Coinbase no longer supports linking new credit cards. 

  • For customers with existing credit cards: Some card issuers are blocking cryptocurrency purchases or charging additional fees for credit card purchases on Coinbase. Consider linking a debit card or bank account instead.

Apple Pay & Google Pay

You can purchase crypto through Coinbase using Apple Pay linked to your debit card.

If you already have a Visa or Mastercard debit card linked in your Apple Wallet, Apple Pay will automatically appear as a payment method when you’re buying crypto on an Apple Pay-supported iOS device or a Safari web browser if you’re signed in to your Apple account.

Buy crypto with Apple Pay

  1. Select the cryptocurrency you want to buy.

  2. Enter the amount.

  3. Select Apple Pay from the list of available payment methods.

  • Your purchase limit is equal to the sum of both your own debit card's transaction limit and Coinbase limits

    • Limits vary depending on region and payment-method type. You can view your limits on the Account limits section of your Settings.

  • Apple Pay is not available on Chrome browser at this time.

  • If your transaction is canceled, please contact your card issuer. 

  • If Apple Pay doesn't appear as an available payment method:

    • Ensure you’re using an iOS device or Safari, and that you're signed into your account

    • Ensure your OS is up to date

    • Contact Apple Pay support

You can purchase crypto through Coinbase using Google Pay linked to your debit card. 

If you already have a Visa or Mastercard debit card linked to your Google Wallet, Google Pay will automatically appear as a payment method when you’re buying crypto on a Google Pay-supported Android device or a supported web browser if you’re signed in to your Google account.

Buy crypto with Google Pay

  1. Select the cryptocurrency you want to buy.

  2. Enter the amount.

  3. Select Google Pay from the list of available payment methods.

  • Google Pay supports the following web browsers:

    • Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, Safari, UC Browser

  • If your transaction is canceled, please contact your card issuer. 

  • If Google Pay doesn't appear as an available payment method:

    • Ensure you’re using an Android device or supported web browser and that you’re signed into your Google account

    • Ensure your device or web browser is up to date

    • In your Google Pay settings, turn on sharing in the "Share that you have Google Pay with companies outside of Google" section located under your Privacy settings (on web) or Data & Personalization (in the mobile app) 

    • Contact Google Pay

Bank wire

Please be careful not to send an overnight or next day ACH. Only actual bank wires ("FedWire") are supported at this time.

Coinbase can only accept wires if:

  • Your legal name on Coinbase matches the name on the bank wire.

  • The wire comes from a US-based bank account.

  • The sending bank account is linked to your Coinbase profile and not linked to another Coinbase account.

  • The "Reference to Beneficiary" field is left blank unless a unique reference code is needed.

  • The exact routing information from your Coinbase account is used for the transfer.

  • Your unique reference code or Coinbase wire account number is included with the wire transaction.

    • You’ll receive either a virtual account number or a reference code, but not both. If a reference code isn’t provided, use your unique account number. If your bank asks for more details about this transaction, you can mention that you were assigned a "Virtual Account Number (VAN)" to complete the transfer.

Note: There are no wire transaction or cashout minimums, however there is a wire fee ($10 for incoming transfers and $25 for outgoing transfers). You must have completed sufficient account verification to obtain a US dollar balance.

Add cash using a bank wire

  1. Select the Assets tab.

  2. Select your USD balance.

  3. Select Add cash.

  4. Select Wire Transfer as the funding payment method.

  5. Use the information displayed to initiate a wire transfer denominated in US dollars from your bank account. 

After the transaction has completed, the funds will be available in your Coinbase USD balance.

Wire cashouts from Coinbase

Once your USD balanceis active and you verify your wire cash out information, you can cash out from your USD balance via bank wire. 

Verify your wire cash out information

  1. Go to Payment Methods and select Add a payment method > Wire transfer.

  2. Follow the prompts to enter the wire details provided by your bank (this will add your bank account).

Cash out via bank wire

  1. Select your USD dollar balance from the Assets page.

  2. Select Cash out.

  3. Select Wire transfer in the To field.

  4. Confirm the amount and select Cash out again.

Wired funds will typically appear in your account within 2-3 business days.

Contact Coinbase support if you have any issues with your wire. Do not contact our partner banks; they will be unable to assist you as your account is managed by Coinbase.

Gift cards

Gift cards can be used to add funds to your Coinbase account. Once a gift card has been redeemed, the value will be added to your account’s USD balance.

Redeem a gift card

  1. Sign in to your account (or create a new account) and go to your payment methods.

    • On web: From your profile icon, select Settings > Payment methods 

    • On mobile: From the home screen, either:

      • Select the menu icon, then Profile & Settings.

      • Select More, then Add Cash, then tap the default drop-down payment method. 

  2. Select Add a new payment method. 

    • Note: If you see a pop-up or ad for another payment service, simply close it to proceed.

  3. Select Gift card. 

  4. Add the gift card number and PIN.
