Limits for U.S. Derivatives

Derivatives Trading on Coinbase Prime › U.S. Derivatives

Several kinds of limits apply to U.S. Derivatives trading. Some are set by the exchange, some by Coinbase Financial Markets (CFM) based on your account.

Order size limits (Coinbase Derivatives Exchange)

CDE caps the size of each order: 5,000 contracts for BTC and ETH products and 1,000 contracts for all other products. Send multiple orders to trade more.

Derivatives Margin limit (CFM)

CFM sets a risk limit for your entity based on your credit review. Your limit usage includes:

  • Margin on open positions

  • Margin on open orders

  • Changes in unrealized profit and loss since the last daily settlement

  • Realized profit and loss today

  • Funding payments accrued today

If an order exceeds your Derivatives Margin limit, it's blocked at order preview with the error message "Order would exceed your risk limit".

Where to see your limits

Your Derivatives Margin limit is shown in the order form on the Trade page and on the Margin page in Prime.

Request a higher limit

Please contact your Account Manager. Increases depend on a credit risk review.
