DEX trading is rolling out gradually across regions and is not yet available to all customers.
Decentralized Exchange (DEX) Trading on Coinbase allows you to trade assets directly from your self-custody wallet on a decentralized exchange from within the Coinbase app.
You can trade DEX assets and manage your portfolio balance, performance, and history all in one place.
DEX assets have not gone through Coinbase’s asset listing process. Make sure you only interact with assets you’ve verified and that you trust. You will hold DEX assets in a self-custody wallet that you will create prior to making a DEX trade.
You initiate and sign DEX transactions with your self-custody wallet using an authentication key held on your device. Coinbase can’t initiate or sign transactions on your behalf. Whenever you trade from a new signed-in device, you’ll recover a new wallet authentication key to that device.

How it works | • When making your first DEX trade, you create a self-custody wallet to hold your DEX assets and an authentication key to sign DEX trades • The authentication key is stored on your device, designed so Coinbase doesn’t have access to your funds and cannot initiate or sign transactions on your behalf. Whenever you trade from a new signed-in device, you’ll recover a new authentication key for that device. • When making a trade, third-party DEX aggregators scan the blockchain looking for the best way to execute your trade onchain. • When you purchase an asset through a DEX, you send USDC from your primary balance off Coinbase. The trade completes on a DEX and the DEX asset is held in your self-custody wallet, not by Coinbase. • When you sell an asset through a DEX, you send the asset from your self-custody wallet to a DEX. The USDC received from the sale is deposited in your primary balance once the trade is complete. |
