Note: Coinbase currently does not accept physical checks or bill pay as a payment method to purchase cryptocurrency or to add cash to a user's cash balance. Checks will be returned to sender upon receipt via mail, provided a mailing address is present.
Bank transfers made via Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) are used to send payments denominated in Euros (EUR) within the SEPA. SEPA transfers have no fees and can only be denominated in EUR.
SEPA transfers only process on business days and can take up to 7 calendar days if sent over a weekend or bank holiday.
Checklist for SEPA success
Confirm that your bank supports SEPA transfers before sending funds
Have a verified ID and phone number added to your Coinbase account
Ensure the name on your bank account matches the name on your Coinbase account
Corporate or institutional bank accounts aren’t supported unless the institutional onboarding process is completed
Include your unique reference code in your bank transfer exactly as it appears
Only add cash denominated in EUR
To add cash via SEPA:
Sign in to your Coinbase account.
From the Home Page, select Assets.
Select your EUR balance, then Add Cash.
The window will display the details that you need to provide your bank for the transfer.
Initiate a SEPA transfer from your bank to your Coinbase account using the bank details shown in the step above.
Your funds will be credited to your account 1-3 business days after you send them. Note: SEPA transfers only process on business days and can take up to 7 calendar days if sent over a weekend or bank holiday.
You are responsible for any conversion or reversal fees performed by your bank.
Note: We're not not able to accept SWIFT international wires at this time. If you send a SWIFT payment to your Coinbase account it will be automatically returned before reaching Coinbase. A return of SWIFT could take up to 10 business days or longer, depending on your bank processing speed.
You can make a purchase with a credit or debit card if your card supports "3D Secure" (3DS). With this payment method, you will not have to pre-fund your account to place an order. You can purchase instantly without waiting for a bank transfer to complete. To see if your card supports 3DS, contact your credit/debit card provider directly.
Some banks require additional authorization on purchases using a 3D Secure card. This may include text messages, a bank-provided security card, or security questions.
Once you select Buy now, you will be directed to select Verify Now on the confirmation window.
You'll be redirected to your card issuer's secure portal to complete required steps to authorize your purchase.
You'll be redirected back to the Coinbase app and your purchase will be complete.
Note: Coinbase no longer supports linking new credit cards and some card issuers are blocking digital currency purchases with existing credit cards. If you have a credit card linked already, your bank may charge additional fees for Coinbase credit card purchases. To avoid these fees, switch to a debit card or bank account.
We're also unable to support prepaid cards or other cards without an associated billing address.
All credit card and debit card payments are processed through Coinbase Payments for the UK and Coinbase Ireland for the rest of Europe.
To link your PayPal account:
Complete all identity document verification steps and confirm that your country of residence is correct.
From your account Settings, select Payment Methods, then Add a Payment Method.
Select PayPal to be prompted to sign in to PayPal.
You can purchase crypto through Coinbase using Apple Pay linked to your debit card.
If you already have a Visa or Mastercard debit card linked in your Apple Wallet, Apple Pay will automatically appear as a payment method when you’re buying crypto on an Apple Pay-supported iOS device or a Safari web browser if you’re signed in to your Apple account.
You can purchase crypto through Coinbase using Google Pay linked to your debit card.
If you already have a Visa or Mastercard debit card linked to your Google Wallet, Google Pay will automatically appear as a payment method when you’re buying crypto on a Google Pay-supported Android device or a supported web browser if you’re signed in to your Google account.
SOFORT is a popular online banking payment method in Europe with high usage in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Belgium.
Coinbase customers can link their bank account using SOFORT to deposit funds to their Coinbase account. Customers will be prompted to sign in to their bank to complete verification.
At this time, SOFORT is deposit only.
iDEAL is an e-commerce payment system used in the Netherlands that allows customers to transfer funds from their bank account.
Coinbase customers can link their bank account using iDeal to deposit funds to their Coinbase account or buy crypto directly. Customers will be prompted to sign in to their bank to complete verification.
At this time, iDeal supports buys and deposits only.
