Allocate trades on Coinbase Prime - Overview

Who can use this feature?

Trade allocation is available to select clients on Coinbase Prime. Contact your Account Manager or the Prime Operations team to gain access. Additionally, you must have one of the following roles in all portfolios involved to perform trade allocations: Full trader, admin, authorized signatory, or initiator.

Trade allocation on Coinbase Prime allows you to allocate completed trades at an aggregate, average price to other portfolios or investment vehicles in your organization. This gives selected portfolios exposure to crypto assets at the same price in custom amounts, instead of different prices across your portfolios.

All portfolios must have enough funds to pay for their end of the allocation. For example, if you allocate a Buy BTC/USD order from portfolio A to portfolio B, portfolio B receives BTC, but needs to pay portfolio A the appropriate amount of USD for the original trades. Fees are allocated pro rata (if portfolio B receives 12.5% of the total, they will pay 12.5% of the original trading fees).

Allocations must also:

  • Be performed within 72 hours after trades are completed

  • Use trades of the same side and market

  • Use pre-funding or utilize trade financing; frozen portfolios with unsettled credit are blocked from allocating trades

  • Be limited to a maximum of 50 portfolios and 75 orders in a single allocation

You can reverse a trade allocation on Coinbase Prime from the source portfolio within 24 hours after it’s completed. Keep in mind that allocations:

  • Are reversed at the same average price of the initial allocation.

  • Can’t be reversed if each portfolio involved doesn’t have adequate funding.

  • Can only be reversed for the entire amount, partial amounts can’t be reversed.

  • Can be reallocated after they're reversed. Reallocation must happen within 72 hours after trade completion.
