2-step verification (also known as 2FA or two-factor authentication) is required to access your account. If you experience issues, follow the steps below to troubleshoot your verification method.
Troubleshoot
Security keys are physical devices registered to your account. If the key is unavailable or not detected, you must use a backup method to sign in. Coinbase can't recover or replace lost keys.
Use a supported browser (latest Chrome, Safari, Edge, Firefox) and the same device type you initially set up the key on.
Check the connection method:
USB keys: Plug in firmly.
NFC keys: Enable NFC and tap when prompted.
Bluetooth keys: Pair the key before trying to sign in.
Ensure browser prompts or push notifications are allowed. If you deny permission to use the key, you’ll need to refresh and try again.
Verify you’re using the correct key for your Coinbase account. Keys are associated to the account they were registered with.
Use the same device/browser you created the passkey on, or a device/browser with passkey sync enabled (such as iCloud Keychain or Google Password Manager).
Check operating system and browser support. Passkeys require recent versions of Chrome, Safari, Edge, or Firefox on compatible devices.
Make sure your device’s unlock method (Face ID, Touch ID, fingerprint, Windows PIN, or security key) is set up and working. Passkeys can’t be used if these are disabled.
Ensure you’re signed in to the correct device and cloud account that stores the passkey, as well as the correct Coinbase email.
If the invitation wasn't received, it may be in the invited contact's spam/junk folder. If not, resend the invitation.
If a trusted contact's name isn’t on your approver list, they haven't yet completed the invitation process.
If trusted contact needs to be removed:
Sign in to your security settings and select 2-step verification.
Select the Trusted Contacts toggle to turn it off.
Once 2FA Push Notifications has been set up, you must be signed in to the Coinbase mobile app and have push notifications enabled on your device to receive push notifications.
If you didn’t receive the notification:
Make sure you’re signed in to the Coinbase mobile app.
Check your device settings to confirm that push notifications are enabled for Coinbase.
Select Resend push on the verification screen to send another notification, or choose an alternate method.
If you can’t access any of your methods, select Update your 2FA to start account recovery.
If your request expired:
2FA Push Notification requests expire after 5 minutes to protect your account.
Return to the device where you started and select Try again, or choose an alternate verification method.
If you denied the request by mistake:
Select Try again to send a new push notification, or choose an alternate verification method.
If you don’t recognize the activity:
Select No, don’t allow to block the request.
Review your account for unauthorized changes and consider locking your account immediately.
If you lost access to your phone and:
SMS is your only form of 2-step verification, follow the recovery process.
You have other forms of 2-step verification (in addition to SMS) and can still sign in, follow the steps to change your phone number.
If you don’t receive a 6-digit SMS code when expected, wait 30 seconds and select Resend code.
If you lost access to your authenticator app and:
Authenticator app is your only form of 2-step verification, follow the recovery process.
You have other forms of 2-step verification, use your other forms to continue signing in.
