Coinbase always sends automated emails from a valid Coinbase email address. Do not reply to any emails or open any links from suspicious email addresses. If you suspect you’ve received a fraudulent email, contact us.

What you'll need

  • To be at least 18 years old (we’ll ask for proof)

  • A government-issued photo ID (we don’t accept passport cards)

  • A computer or smartphone connected to the internet

  • A phone number connected to your smartphone (we'll send SMS text messages)

  • The latest version of your browser (we recommend Chrome), or the latest Coinbase App version. If you’re using the Coinbase app, make sure your phone’s operating system is up-to-date.

Create your account

Go to https://www.coinbase.com from a browser on your computer, or download and open the consumer-app-icon Coinbase app on Android or iOS to get started.

Note: We don’t recommend accessing Coinbase through a browser on your mobile device. Do not use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) during the account creation process.

Using the Coinbase app

  1. Select Create free account

  2. Enter your first name, last name, and email address and select Continue.

    • If your legal name includes only one name and you don't have a last name, enter your legal name in the First Name field and a single dash (-) in the Last Name field.

  3. Create a password that meets the criteria listed and select Create account.

  4. Coinbase will send a verification email to your registered email address.

Using a desktop browser

  1. Select Sign up.

  2. Follow the prompts and select Get started.

  3. You’ll be asked to provide your legal name as it appears on your government-issued ID (we’ll ask for proof later in the process), the email address you’d like to use, and to create a password.

  4. Read the User Agreement and Privacy Policy.

  5. Coinbase will send a verification email to your registered email address.

Verify your email

  1. Select Verify Email Address in the email you received from Coinbase.com. This email will be from no-reply@coinbase.com.  

  2. Enter the code on the email verification screen.

Add your personal information

  1. Enter your name, date of birth, and address as shown on your valid government-issued photo ID—you’ll need to submit a photo of this ID later.

  2. You’ll also need to answer some questions about yourself.

  3. Select Continue to finish the process.
