Transfer assets out of Coinbase (ACATS out)

Transfer eligible investments between a Coinbase Capital Markets (CCM) brokerage account and other banks and brokerage firms using an automated customer account service (ACATS) transfer.

To move stocks into Coinbase using ACATS (US only), see Transfer stocks to Coinbase (ACATS in).

Automated Customer Account Transfer Service (ACATS)

The Automated Customer Account Transfer Service (ACATS) is the industry‑standard system that moves a customer’s investment account (full or partial) from one brokerage firm to another in a controlled, auditable way.

Customers use ACATS to move:

  • Existing positions without selling first.

  • Cost basis and tax lots.

  • Account history and related information, subject to each firm’s policies.

In the U.S., both the delivering and receiving brokers are required to support customer account transfers under FINRA Rule 11870.

This article explains how to transfer assets out of Coinbase using ACATS.

Transfer assets out (ACATS out) of Coinbase Capital Markets (CCM)

Before starting:

  • Make sure there are no restrictions on your account. Account restrictions may impact the ability to transfer assets. Cash must be settled before initiating a transfer.

  • Confirm you’re moving eligible stocks and ETFs held in your CCM brokerage account.

  • Confirm your legal first and last name, account type, and CCM account number match exactly what you provide to the receiving firm.

  • Fractional shares cannot be transferred through the ACATs, and a full transfer request may result in any fractional shares you own being sold and transferred as their settled cash value. This sale is a taxable event.

  1. Start the transfer request at your new brokerage.

    • ACATS transfers out of Coinbase must be initiated by the receiving firm. Start the transfer request from the destination brokerage's "Transfer assets" or similar flow and choose Coinbase Capital Markets as the delivering firm.

  2. Select a full transfer for all eligible assets and cash from your CCM account or a partial transfer for only specified assets and/or cash you want to move.

  3. Enter your CCM account details exactly as shown on your Coinbase Capital Markets account statement (legal name, account type, and your CCM brokerage account number). Any discrepancy can result in rejection or delays.

  4. Submit the request with your receiving firm.

    • The receiving brokerage sends an ACATS request to CCM (via Apex Clearing) for processing.

  5. Wait for processing and settlement.

    • During processing, impacted stocks may be restricted from trading until the transfer completes.

    • Most ACATS-out transfers complete within 3-5 business days, though timing can vary by firm and asset mix.

    • Stock trades settle on a T+1 basis (one business day after the trade date).

  6. Watch for residual activity.

    • After a full ACATS out, your CCM brokerage account may remain restricted while residual dividends, corporate actions, and fees are swept to the receiving firm.

If you need to sell a position urgently during an active ACATS out, contact your receiving brokerage to understand your options before submitting the transfer.

If needed, the address for APEX Clearing is ONE DALLAS CENTER 350 N. ST. PAUL, SUITE 1300, DALLAS, TX 75201.

Fees for transferring assets out

  • CCM passes through a $75 ACATS‑out fee from Apex Clearing for outgoing transfers.

    • The fee is typically deducted from your cash balance.

    • If your cash balance is insufficient, the fee may be debited from your external brokerage account instead.

  • Your receiving brokerage may also charge its own ACATS‑in fee. Check their fee schedule for details.

For the most current information, see the equities pricing and fees disclosures article.

When transfers can be delayed or rejected

Your ACATS‑out request can be delayed or rejected for reasons such as:

  • Account title or name mismatch between the CCM account and the receiving firm’s request.

  • Unsupported account type (for example, IRA or joint accounts not eligible for this flow).

  • Unsupported or unallowed securities included in the transfer.

  • Invalid or mismatched account number or DTC information (DTC Information is a clearing firm's unique identifier which is normally a 2 to 4 digit number). If needed, Coinbase's DTC number is 0158.

  • Very small or empty accounts or balances below internal thresholds at the contra (receiving) firm.

If a transfer is rejected or fails, you’ll receive an email with the reason and, where applicable, guidance to resolve the issue and have the receiving firm submit a new request.
